.in domains are available for registration by anyone until May 27, 2025.

Starting May 28, 2025, new registrations, transfers, and ownership changes will only be allowed for Indian citizens and companies registered in India.

Mandatory KYC (Know Your Customer) procedures will also be introduced, requiring verification of the registrant’s identity. The following will be required:

  • submission of an identity document (e.g., passport, national ID, or company registration certificate),
  • verification of email address and phone number,
  • matching contact details with WHOIS records – use of WHOIS privacy, proxy services, or temporary email addresses (e.g., ProtonMail) will not be permitted.

KYC verification will apply only to new registrations, transfers, and ownership changes. Existing domains will remain active without the need for verification, unless ownership or provider is changed.

Alternative: .co.in domains are available without any restrictions – they can still be registered regardless of citizenship or company location. This makes them a practical alternative to .in domains in light of the upcoming requirements.
